What separates a great resume from the good one? [Video]

What do employers look for in a resume?

Here’s what Rohit Thakur, one of India’s top HR professionals says. He tells us the three golden rules anyone applying for a job must follow:

1. Put you best foot forward
What separates a great CV from a good one is how well you showcase your accomplishments. The best way is to list your achievements instead of just talking about what you did in your last jobs—preferably with the help of numbers (“Led a project that generated revenues worth Rs 5 million and expanded client base by 42%.”). “(The interviewer wants to know) what is the output they’ve created, what is the impact that they have had.” explains Thakur.

2. Be original
Don’t try too hard to be someone you’re not when you walk into an interview. If you get the job, you will be in it for the long haul. In that case, an honest projection of your personality is your best bet. Be yourself—but be your best self—is sensible advice to follow while appearing for an interview.

3. Go in prepared
Companies invest time and resources in the candidate selection process. So it’s only natural they expect candidates to return the favor. “Your interviewer should take away the feeling that you are as enthusiastic about joining the company as they are about hiring you,” says Thakur. The best way to convey that message? Coming to the interview well-prepared.

Recruiters try and gauge whether candidates have the skills & talents required for the role (leadership, innovation, etc.) and whether s/he will be a good cultural fit. As a candidate, you need to show up prepared, be honest and leave the rest to fate.
