Job Overview:

This role as a Printing Manufacturing Technology Engineer features two strategically important key areas. On one hand, the role is responsible to design and implement a solution-oriented, lean, and efficient process framework that closely guide and support the development of state-of-the-art printing solutions for injection-molded components. The aim is to simplify and standardize printing development activities, reducing complexity, and minimize non-value adding tasks to accomplish high levels of operational excellence in our internal process landscape. On the other hand, the introduction of innovative, robust, and technically advanced printing technologies that combine high quality yields with optimal productivity is also a key part of the role. The role furthermore owns or supports assigned strategic initiatives, assuring successful project delivery and change implementation in pro-active collaboration with interdisciplinary project teams within agreed time and cost constraints.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Drive the advanced development of internal printing development processes and define how SHL will pursue development activities for printed components in the future
  • Strive for excellence: Shape an efficient, solution-oriented development framework to standardize development sequences, minimize complexity, boost efficiency, reduce throughput time, and eliminate non-value-adding activities.
  • Create an innovation pipeline for advanced printing, coating, and surface finish technologies to upgrade or replace the existing ones. Design and pivot novel technologies and printing concepts in collaboration with internal research facilitates and external partners to assess the technical and economic feasibility of potential solutions.
  • Identify and implement automated, innovative, and differentiated printing solutions to optimize quality and consistency, by pursuing a systematic approach to project experimentation, testing, and validation.
  • Lead research activities to evaluate the technical and economic feasibility of potential new printing technologies and concepts.
  • Strategically advise the leadership team on new technologies, processes, and equipment that will deliver value-enhancing innovations.
  • Improve existing capabilities by leveraging external technologies from inventors, suppliers, equipment manufacturers, academia, and adjacent markets.
  • Design suitable test methods and conduct experiments (e.g. laboratory or process experiments) in order to assess new technologies, materials, processes, equipment, etc.
  • Interact cross-functionally with internal and external key individuals and teams within operations to ensure end results do not only meet customer expectations, but also deliver the desired technical attributes regarding quality, value add, regulatory, cost targets, and delivery timelines.
  • Maintain an extensive network of 3rd party contacts, sources of innovation, and concepts.
  • Safeguard relevant specifications and ensure full compliance with regulatory requirements.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • Relevant university degree in Industrial, Mechanical, Chemical, or Printing Engineering (PhD is a plus)
  • At least 3 years of relevant work experience in a printing process development role or similar
  • Extensive experience with automated printing solution e.g. in the areas of laser printing, UV printing, pad printing, screen printing, flexographic, offset, screen, letterpress, gravure, and other new digital printing technologies that can be leveraged in this role
  • A sound understanding of related chemical aspects or applied practice with different inks, coatings, adhesives, additives, etc. is a big plus
  • Knowledge of relevant printing parameters and setup requirements incl. tooling specification and component requirements incl. related tool specifications, cylinders, anilox, blankets, cutting dies, embossing, foils, etc.
  • Self-driven with high levels of independence and persistence, a positive attitude, and a curious mindset
  • Skilled in structured problem solving and logical thinking
  • Comprehensive organizational skills and project management ability
  • Strong desire to strive for operational excellence, even under adverse circumstances or when facing ambiguity
  • Advanced experience with Adobe Illustrator is a plus
  • Conversational communication skills in English (TOEIC 600 or above) and fluent in Chinese
  • Effective communication and presentation skills to communicate complex information to diverse groups of stakeholders
